Hello
Everyone!
First,
the monthly meeting has been changed to the third MONDAY of
every month instead of the third Tuesday. EVERYONE IS
WELCOME to these meetings! Please come if you are
interested.
Second,
our website name will be changing. We felt that it was too
long and some people may not know how to spell “Siuslaw” who
don’t live here, so it will be changing to
www.sfafish.org All
minutes of meetings, tide tables and pictures of events are
there. As we grow, the site will grow with us. If you have
any great fish stories we can put on the site that would be
great as well!
We had
a great time at the Winter Folk Festival in February. Go
to the website to see who won all the great raffle prizes,
including a fishing trip! It was great meeting the public,
having a few laughs and raising some money for our
scholarship fund. Go to the website to see some pictures!
Our
next event will be the Rhody Day Parade and, the next weekend,
the Reedsport Parade. We will be sprucing up the float and
looking for volunteers to be on it. If you would like to
help with any of it, your time will be greatly
appreciated!!! Just contact any of your Board Members and
let them know how you would like to help.
We have
enclosed part of an article about our fishing industry. It is the first 4 pages of a 14 page report. If you would like
to see the rest of it, go to
www.dfw.state.or.us/fish and look for the title of the
article.
There
is a small article as well from the Register Guard that
updates this article showing a hope full salmon season
starting in May.
NOW
FOR THE REALLY GOOD NEWS!
Last
September the Lane County Economic Development Standing
Committee was approached for giving the SFA the last large
Grant that we would need to finish the Ice Machine. Since
the money we were asking for was in a fund that was to be
used to develop projects as loans and we were looking for a
grant, it has taken some time to get through the politics of
it all, but last month the Port of Siuslaw and the Lane
County Commissioners voted unanimously to give us the money
as a Grant and not a Loan. The Florence City Council also
voted to support this Grant with only one member voting
against it (Mrs. Roberts). The Grant is for also
$80,000.00. The final meeting between the
Port of
Siuslaw,
the SFA, and the Economic Development Committee took place
March 23 and it is finally a go!
In the
next few days the building permits, bids for the final
construction of the Ice Auger and mechanical and electrical
work as well as the work on the cat walk will begin the
final process of getting the Ice Machine functional will
begin!
We will
post updates on the web site as the work progresses so be
sure to watch for that! There WILL be a final ribbon cutting
and celebration as well. It would be great if any of you
can volunteer to help with that. Contact any of your Board
members if you are interested.
Here’s
to a successful fishing season this year, and a functional
Ice Machine in
Florence!
