Hello
Everyone!
Yes, I am a little late on the
newsletter. What can I say ?!? ....Better late
than never, I guess!
The good news is that we have
completed all the jumping through hoops for our final grant,
and you should be seeing the final stages of getting the Ice
Machine finished soon !!! Mike Slover, with Key Mechanical,
did get the bid for the project, and he has said that the
auger should be complete by today! It will then get
transported here and installed.
Brien Mill got the bid to do
the stairs and railing, and he has been busy getting steel
cut and ready to set for those projects. The bad news is
that we can have no volunteer work to assist on any of these
projects. If any of you know someone with a CCB license and
workman’s comp coverage that would like to assist Brien
installing the stairs under his contract, please contact
him. That is the only help that he can have.
There will be a long awaited
celebration party, for sure, when the Ice Machine is up and
ready to run! YEAH!!!!
The other good news is we gave
out two scholarships again this year. They went to Clinton
Waite and Lindsay Haitt this year. Good luck, you two, on
your future. We're so glad we could help you along!
We have ordered new hats and
t-shirts to help do a little fund raising. They look great,
and if anyone is interested in one, please contact Shirley
and Bud. We also have a permit to sell them down on the
docks on the weekends. If any of you could possibly spare a
few hours sitting under a tent and selling them on a
Saturday or Sunday, we could certainly use the help!
Again, please contact Shirley if you can do that.
Speaking of fund raising, the
annual fish barbeque will be here sooner that we think. We
are in desperate need to have help with this. It is a
tremendous job putting it all together and then spending the
day there. The few of us that have done this in the past
really need some fresh faces to help. PLEASE consider
helping with this. Contact any Board member and give them
your name.
What do we need more fund
raising for, if the Ice Machine is done? Well,.…the SFA is
about more than just getting the Ice Machine. It is about
supporting the local fishery here in
Florence. We
want the public to know this is a viable source of income
for the community and a way of life that has not died out.
We are here to support the commercial fisherman, the sport
fisherman, and the environment the fish need to survive.
There is plenty of work to do after the Ice Machine is done,
and it all takes funding!
What income does fishing bring
to the community? I have enclosed the ODFW estimated
revenue for fishing for the
Port of
Siuslaw
over the past 30 years. The left column is the actual
income and the right column is the consumer price index
(what that money would be at today’s value) The Ice Machine
went down in 2004. See what an impact it had when we
no longer had one in 2005! This is just commercial fishing;
it does not cover the sports fishing and what it brings to
the community!
The other news we need to be
aware of that could greatly impact us is the continued push
to have an OPAC Marine Reserve off of Cape Perpetua, as well
as 8 other sites along the Oregon Coast. This process is
quietly being pushed forward with a goal date of October of
this year.
Quotes from their own
handout on their June 21 meeting:
1) What are the possible economic opportunities and/or
benefits that may result from the marine reserve? The first
one on their list is: Possible opportunities
for local and displaced fisherman to assist in
biological and socioeconomic monitoring through research
contracts.
2) What potential social and cultural impact of closure to
consumptive and non-consumptive users at this site? Answers:
A) Commercial fisherman would lose both traditional and
professional fishing grounds which could have a generational
impact. B) Recreational and subsistence
fishing by local shore anglers could be prohibited and have
a negative impact personally, to family structure, and
traditionally.
3) Agate collection from the inter-tidal area could be
prohibited and have a negative impact personally,
professionally, and traditionally. (I include this one as
being a member of the rock club in Florence. We had
them come to a meeting, and they told us at that meeting
this would not be affected. Yet, here it is a year later,
and they are saying it will be!)
Well, if you want to be
involved, these are some contacts for you: Oregon
Department of Fish and Wildlife staff Cristen Don, Melissa
Murphey; Oregon Sea Grant OSU Extension Jeff Feldner;
Community team members include Mike Pettis, All Pazar, Paul
Engelmeyer, Eddie Huckins, Dianne Burch, Mark Freeman, Mike
Becker, Larry Nixon, Joe Rohleder, Walter Chuck, Gus Gates,

Hoffman.
